Arthurian Centre, Camelford, Cornwall Arthurian Centre
Slaughterbridge, Camelford , Cornwall , PL32 9TT
Tel: +44 (0)1840 213947
Web site: www.arthur-online.co.uk
Discount: 10% off per person
Description of this Business.
.The Arthurian Centre exhibition room is sited near to the 6th Century inscribed stone at Slaughterbridge in North Cornwall. It has been completely re-written and presented for 2011/12 after extensive research over more than 20 years. This is the only place in Cornwall dedicated to telling the stories of King Arthur in such depth and the collection of display panels, photographs, illustrations, texts and specially commissioned paintings embrace more than 1,500 years of history and legend. The story tells us that the final battle between Arthur and his nephew/ son Mordred took place on this site in the first part of the 6th Century. The Roman occupation of Britain ended in AD 410 and was soon followed by an Anglo-Saxon onslaught. It is likely that Arthur was the Celtic leader who became a national hero as he led the British hosts against the Saxons. For over 800 years writers have identified the banks of the river Camel as Arthur’s final battleground. As one would expect, the old Cornish field names around the area, reflect these events. Leland ( 1538) recorded that ‘ various antiquities, such as rings, fragments of armour, ornaments of bridles and other trappings’ had been found. The Register of the Cornwall Committee for Rescue Archaeology also records ( Lake 111, 365) “ on removing a tree on the barton of Worthyvale 5 or 6 years ago, i.e. 1864-5, several spearheads of iron were found”. The ‘ King Arthur Stone’ at Slaughterbridge was first recorded by Carew in 1602 but had lain on the river bank for a thousand years before that. It is a 6th century memorial stone which coincides in time with the legendary last battle between Arthur and his nephew Mordred, referred to as the battle of Camlann. Description of this Business.
Chysauster Ancient Village is an Iron Age settlement that was originally occupied almost 2,000 years ago. The village consisted of stone-walled homesteads known as 'courtyard houses', found only on the Land's End peninsula and the Isles of Scilly. The houses line a 'village street', and each had an open central courtyard surrounded by a number of thatched rooms. There are also the remains of an enigmatic 'fogou' underground passage. It is accessible from the main car park via two flights of uneven stone steps and an uneven, twisting and narrow unsurfaced ascending path. Those with an ambulant disability are advised to call the property for access information. An accompanying companion is strongly advised. Description of this Business.
Geevor Tin Mine & Heritage Centre is set in 67-acres on the magnificent North Atlantic coast and is one of the largest preserved Tin mine sites in the country. Its outstanding collections and listed buildings tell the story of Cornwall’s industrial mining past, making it the Western Gateway to the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. The landscape and identity of Cornwall as we know it today have been shaped by centuries of mining. As far back as the Bronze Age, around 4000 years ago, people began to work the land in search of tin, copper and other metals. Geevor is a 20th Century tin mine, located in an area that has been mined for thousands of years. From the earliest times until the final closure in 1990, the price of tin played a major role in the changing fortunes of the mine and this greatly affected the people and the landscape of the surrounding area. Geevor can currently only show our visitors a tiny fraction of what is beneath their feet. A huge network of tunnels and stopes runs from the top of the site beyond the road down to the sea. Originally the workings stretched far out below sea level. However, there’s just as much to see and learn from the surface buildings at Geevor Tin Mine. About two- thirds of the work force actually worked above ground, in jobs that supported the underground or helped to process the ore into tin concentrate, the mine’s finished product. The ground beneath your feet is a natural treasure store, containing rocks, metals and minerals which have been essential to our everyday lives for thousands of years.  Dig deeper to discover why tin is found at Geevor and learn about other useful metals and beautiful minerals found in Cornwall. For more information please click here www.geevor.com.
